Please note that we will be providing updates on these events.

Greggs: Navigating Profit Pressures Ahead of Q3

Greggs has faced significant valuation pressures in 2025 as it starts overcoming early-year challenges. In the first half of the year, sales climbed by 7% to over £1 billion, primarily due to new store openings. However, like-for-like sales only grew by a modest 2.6%, and operating profit declined by 7.1% to £70 million. This downturn stems from persistent inflation and expenses tied to the establishment of two new distribution centers.

The overall consumer spending environment remains unstable, and Greggs is at a crossroads. While they have implemented price hikes to stimulate sales, risk lies in overextending customer tolerances. Notably, the company maintains its full-year guidance, predicting operating profit to remain slightly below the 2024 figure of £195 million. As the third-quarter results approach, the pressure mounts for a turnaround in momentum, particularly as cash flows diminish.

Tesco: Will First-Half Results Meet Expectations?

Tesco has started the year robustly, showcasing like-for-like sales growth of 4.6% in Q1, driven by a 5.1% upswing in the UK market. Central Europe and Booker also contributed positively, demonstrating a strong, broad-based performance.

However, the group is cautious, projecting full-year underlying operating profits to yield between £2.7 billion and £3 billion, slightly below the previous year’s £3.1 billion. This conservative outlook stems from concerns surrounding possible price wars in the grocery sector, which, although we find such predictions overly cautious, could impact the market dynamics.

Tesco’s strong scale, competitive pricing strategies, and successful expansion of its Tesco Finest range position it to maintain customer loyalty and potentially capture further market share. If current trends persist, there might be room for upward guidance as the year advances.

J D Wetherspoon: Steady Performance Amid Cost Challenges

J D Wetherspoon remains resilient in navigating 2025, expecting like-for-like sales growth of around 5.1% in its forthcoming results. However, the burden of escalating wages and taxes is constraining profit growth, with analysts forecasting an operating profit of about £140 million.

The company has also indicated that net debt will rise to an estimated £720 million, compared to £660 million a year ago. Consequently, the recently reinstated dividend is expected to remain unchanged at 12p per share, although this remains uncertain.

Looking ahead, the focus is on the company’s future outlook. Signs of sluggishness in the pubs and restaurant sector have already emerged early this year, and while Wetherspoon remains competitive, it faces potential headwinds if the upcoming November budget introduces further cost pressures or diminishes consumer spending power.

Final Thoughts

As we approach the financial results of these key players, investors should stay alert to the evolving market landscape. This article provides an overview based on current insights; however, always conduct thorough research or consult with a financial expert before making investment decisions.
