Revitalizing Cwmbran: Exciting Plans for Gwent Square’s Transformation

Cwmbran is set to undergo a remarkable transformation as part of the Transforming Towns programme, with a significant investment of £1.25 million directed towards redesigning the town center. This project is part of a broader £2.5 million initiative funded by the Welsh Government aimed at rejuvenating local areas and enhancing community engagement.

A New Vision for Gwent Square

The primary objective of the revitalization project is to enhance Gwent Square into a versatile public space that caters to the needs of residents and visitors alike. The ambitious plan includes the following features, pending planning approval:

  • New seating areas for relaxation and socializing
  • Planting of trees to enhance green space
  • A dedicated food and drink area to promote local culinary businesses

Boosting Local Economy and Foot Traffic

Community leaders believe the redesign will attract more visitors to Cwmbran, ultimately boosting the local economy. James Ralph, owner of Shampooch Dog Grooming Studio, expressed optimism:

“Anything that helps improve footfall is welcome, but the town is going through a transition. A lot of shops seem to be moving units or leaving, so anything that helps attract more people is positive.”

Collaborative Efforts for Community Benefit

This transformative project will be spearheaded by Pobl Group, with collaborative input from the Welsh Government, Torfaen County Borough Council, and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, among private partners.

Additionally, the redevelopment will see neighboring Gwent House transformed into a residence for social housing, which will add approximately 77 new apartments across six floors. These new flats will accommodate various groups, including older individuals, young people, and residents with special needs, fostering an inclusive community.

Local Business Perspectives

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, not all local entrepreneurs feel optimistic. Nicole Seaward, who invested in her food business, The Hungry Fork, shared her concerns:

“It’s a bit of a joke really, they promised us a space in the town center, and we were told we couldn’t have it. Now they’ve got all this money for new shops—it makes no sense.”

A Hub for Community Wellbeing

In addition to commercial enhancements, the project aims to establish a well-being hub focused on community support. This hub will include:

  • Space for community groups
  • A modernized library
  • A venue for social enterprises

These new facilities are intended to serve as a vibrant focal point for local residents, fostering community engagement and support.

Addressing Broader Community Needs

Mark Ward-Jones, a Fairwater resident and Labour party member, has emphasized the importance of ensuring that revitalization efforts extend beyond the town center to benefit surrounding areas:

“It’s good to have improvements for Cwmbran town center, but we want to make sure the outside areas aren’t forgotten as well.”

Recent Developments in Cwmbran

Following the recent redevelopment, a new JD superstore and gym opened in August, further enhancing the area and drawing new visitors. The community has responded positively, enjoying the expanded shopping and fitness options.

Government Support for Local Development

Highlighting the importance of the project, Jayne Bryant, the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, stated:

“Transforming Towns is about more than just physical improvements – it’s about creating sustainable, prosperous communities where people want to live, work, and visit.”

The ongoing efforts at Gwent Square illustrate how strategic investments are vital for revitalizing town centers and promoting community well-being.

Conclusion

Cwmbran’s transformation is a testament to the power of collaboration, investment, and community engagement. As the Gwent Square project unfolds, it is set to breathe new life into the town center, fostering economic growth and strengthening community ties. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to a revitalized space that meets the diverse needs of the community. The future of Cwmbran is bright, and the journey towards renewal is just beginning.
