In Focus: The FIRE Movement at Camp
Discovering the FIRE Community
I’m Meera, and I cover retirement and financial planning for The Globe. The camp I attended was organized for followers of the FIRE movement—Financial Independence, Retire Early—where individuals aspire to save and invest enough to exit the workforce years ahead of traditional schedules. Having explored the cautionary aspects of FIRE in the past, I was eager to witness its community-driven heart.
How I Got Involved
My invitation came through a casual Reddit scroll, introducing me to CMTO Firescape, a gathering designed to unite FIRE enthusiasts. Founded in 2017 by Chris and Leslie Potvin in Ontario, the camp has become a haven for those inspired by Mr. Money Mustache, a renowned FIRE blogger with a devoted following.
The Camp Experience: Challenges and Connections
Gaining admission to CMTO Firescape is competitive; only 65 attendees are accepted each year, with tickets allocated by lottery. I reached out to Chris Potvin in April, initially uncertain if my message would be answered. Astonishingly, he replied within two hours, warmly inviting me to join, albeit cautioning me about some campers’ reluctance to speak with a journalist.
Despite rainy weather on the first day, which threatened to dampen spirits, campers arrived from various locations, including British Columbia, Seattle, and even Australia. Among the attendees were young adults learning financial basics and seasoned individuals who had already embraced early retirement.
The Camp Agenda: Knowledge and Networking
The weekend featured an array of talks covering topics such as estate planning and financial tools, many facilitated by previous campers who were eager to share their insights. However, the true pulse of the camp lay beyond the scheduled events.
Community First: Laughter Amidst the Rain
Often caricatured as a solitary pursuit of spreadsheets and strict budgeting, the FIRE movement truly shines in its sense of community. Despite economic uncertainties, the camp provided a refreshing escape, filled with laughter that even the rains couldn’t overpower.
I connected with a diverse group of individuals: a cancer survivor, a millionaire living in a van, a father-son duo, and someone navigating life’s changes after a divorce. Surprisingly, many were enthusiastic to share their FIRE journeys.
Conclusion: A New Perspective on Financial Freedom
My camp experience deepened my understanding of the FIRE movement and the connections formed among its members. I returned home with a fresh perspective and an encouragement to revisit my own financial habits.
