Unlocking Personal Finance Knowledge: A Journey with Finance University

For over two decades, Finance University has dedicated itself to enhancing the financial literacy of educators in West Virginia. This unique weeklong seminar immerses teachers in the dynamic landscape of personal finance, enabling them to not only elevate their own financial understanding but also to equip their students with crucial financial skills.

Elevating Educators Through Innovative Learning

In 2024, the Center for Financial Literacy Education (CFLE) partnered with PRA Group to welcome nearly 50 educators to Morgantown, WV. Attendees experienced engaging presentations from renowned organizations such as NextGen Personal Finance, the Federal Reserve Bank, FoolProof, Troutwood, Take Charge Today (TCT), and others.

A New Theme for 2024

This year’s seminar, themed “Teaching Personal Finance for Lifelong Success,” includes familiar faces from previous sessions, complemented by fresh insights from new partners like Equitable Advisors. This blend of returning and new voices ensures a wide range of perspectives and tools for educators to take back to their classrooms.

Key Features of the Seminar

The seminar is an exceptional opportunity for primary and secondary educators, offering numerous benefits:

  • Free Attendance: The seminar is entirely free, providing educators with both a hotel stay and daily meals.
  • Recognized Credibility: It is acknowledged as a best practice for teacher training by the U.S. Financial Literacy Education Commission (U.S. FLEC).
  • Professional Development: The program satisfies the West Virginia Department of Education’s criteria for attaining the Personal Finance Education Specialist advanced credential and offers three hours of professional development credit.

By dedicating a week of their summer, educators can deepen their knowledge of earning, spending, saving, investing, and protecting money while gaining valuable credentials.

Testimonials: What Teachers Say

Participants consistently praise the seminar for its interactive learning environment. Here are some comments from local educators:

  • “This was one of the most enjoyable and beneficial professional development courses I have taken. Thank you all for everything! Incredibly well done!”
  • “I truly hope to attend again in future years and plan to recruit more coworkers to attend! Great job :)”
  • “Every year, there has been a reminder of something we covered previously, plus new resources to implement.”
  • “As a first-year teacher, this seminar empowered me to teach personal finance skills that will last my students a lifetime.”

These testimonials reflect the dedication of Finance University to not only provide knowledge but also foster a community for educators.
